Take Rock. Take Dance. Mix with electonically driven funk. This best describes The Would Be Emperors.
Funk and dance Drum and Bass lines interlink with Fat Boy Slim Guitar hooks, condensed into songs comlimented with a dose of Manchunian vocal attitude. There are hints of the sound of Daft Punk and Digitalism mixed with Reverend and the Makers and Style Council. Sharp Reggae guitar lines skirt above melodic early Chillies-influenced bass whilst the drums thump with almost sampled precision.
As lovers of music we find it difficult to ghettoise ourselves into a single genre, other than being content to let our divergent range of influences mix in a big melting pot of melodic brilliance.
We are The Would Be Emperors, and we've just spent the last eighteen months refining our sound and live act to breaking point. Following in Manchester's proud musical heritage we focus on driving forward Rock with the addition of Dance and Electronica influences to create something new, exciting and above all ours.
The band evolved when three Uni Friends met with a remit of making some truly modern music that would draw from Manchesters rich musical heritage. They are Mike (Vocals), Joe (guitar) and Efe (Bass). The band later became complete when Alex (drums) joined after many excruciating drummer auditions.
Since then we have become a real force within the Manchester music scene and played venues such as The Night & Day, Star & Garter, Dry Bar, Ruby Lounge, the Cavern Club (Liverpool) and MAPS festival, to name but a few. Meanwhile gaining airplay on local independent and BBC radio stations in the Northwest and Midlands, aswell as being dicovered in Colorado, Austria and Switzerland.

"...The Would Be Emperors, trade in electronically driven melodic funk (obviously). Don’t reach for the platform shoes just yet. What we’re talking about here is a busy flurry of sequencing and almost-to-the-point-of-sampled guitar loops, all cascading in a style that immediately reminds you of the edgy pop excellence of someone like Reverend And The Makers - a classy parallel it is too. “Funkchester” is a stylish and well executed example of the Emperors abilities, whilst “She’ll Shine For You” is drifting indie, that makes it clear that there’s a good bit of song writing talent going on here. “Q & A” may also be an attractive proposition...A fine demo all round from an honest to god band who can most definitely write catchy songs."
